The World Maritime University (WMU) participated in the 2024 IMO GHG Smart Project’s practical training and study visit, held from November 4 to 8 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The event, hosted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), brought together 50 participants from across the maritime industry to enhance capacity-building efforts for sustainable maritime transport.

The training aimed to address the growing challenges of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in maritime transport and align the global shipping industry with international decarbonization goals. Attendees engaged in a range of activities, including hands-on workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions, and site visits to innovative maritime facilities in Busan, one of the leading hubs for maritime technology and sustainability.

WMU’s participation highlighted its commitment to fostering the next generation of maritime leaders equipped to tackle climate change challenges. WMU representatives contributed to discussions on integrating innovative technologies and strategies to achieve low-carbon shipping solutions, reinforcing the institution’s leadership role in advancing sustainable maritime education and practices.

The practical training also served as an opportunity for global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to exchange insights on GHG reduction strategies, digitalization in shipping, and best practices in sustainable port operations. Participants left the program with enhanced knowledge and tools to drive forward the maritime sector’s energy transition.

The event is part of the broader IMO GHG Smart Project, which supports the implementation of IMO’s GHG reduction strategy. This initiative reflects a collective commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient maritime industry, aligning with international efforts to combat climate change.
